Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, and Teamsters Local 1150 presented a $125,000 check to Connecticut military veteran charities at the ninth annual Homerun for Heroes charity event at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford. Roughly 6,850 people were in attendance for the sold-out game.

“We’re proud to recognize our military men and women through the ninth annual Homerun for Heroes event,” said Sikorsky president Dan Schultz. “At Sikorsky, we’re committed to working with our community partners to provide needed resources to veterans and their families to honor their dedication and service.”

Homerun for Heroes sponsored nearly 300 veterans and their families for the Hartford Yard Goats baseball game on Aug. 3. The sponsorship included a ticket to the event, a meal, and transportation to the event if necessary.

“With a membership approaching 4,000, many of whom are veterans, Teamsters Local 1150 has a rich history of helping veterans through a variety of programs and fund-raising efforts, including the Homerun for Heroes program,” said Local 1150 president John Santamaria. “As defense workers, we serve our active-duty military on the job every day and are proud to continue supporting veterans who have served our nation with dignity and valor.”

Families, veterans, and fans enjoyed the game versus the Trenton Thunder, the New York Yankees’ Double A affiliate; a celebrity appearance by major league baseball all-star Rob Dibble; three-shot Howitzer salute by the Connecticut Army National Guard and fireworks to close out the night. This year, Homerun for Heroes featured a job fair in collaboration with CT Teamster Locals, United Auto Workers, First Student, and Helmets to Hardhats to connect veterans with employment resources.

Since 2011, Sikorsky and Teamsters have raised more than half a million dollars through Homerun for Heroes, and are excited to continue this annual military and veteran appreciation baseball game with the Hartford Yard Goats. Benefiting and attending nonprofit organizations included Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), VA Connecticut Healthcare System, Community Health Charities and four military veteran charities:

  • Connecticut Veterans Legal Center, a legal services organization that helps veterans overcome legal barriers to housing, healthcare and income;
  • Connecticut Fallen Heroes Foundation, an organization honoring the families of those who have fallen in the service of our country;
  • Columbus House/Harkness House, a transitional housing facility for homeless male veterans; and
  • Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes, a community-based transitional home dedicated to homeless female veterans and their children.
