MD Helicopters, Inc. (MDHI) has selected Genesys Aerosystems’ new-generation integrated display units (IDUs) as standard aboard its iconic twin-engine helicopter, the MD 902 Explorer. The Genesys system features a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-certified open architecture and will be available Q3 2017.

“We are thrilled to partner with Genesys Aerosystems on our twin engine glass cockpit initiative,” said Lynn Tilton, chief executive officer for MD Helicopters. “I have worked with my MD team for years, dedicated to deliver a highly capable and customizable next generation glass cockpit solution for our MD 902 operators. This goal has finally been met. The open-architecture solution developed by Genesys Aerosystems offers innovative, leap-ahead capabilities that will provide enhanced accessibility to critical data for our operators and a tremendous leap forward in technology for us.”

“This is the forward-leaning, truly evergreen cockpit solution I have long envisioned,” she said.

The Genesys Aerosystems integrated IDU-680 EFIS/EICAS/MFD system aboard the MD 902 Explorer features:

  • Three IDU-680, six-inch by nine-inch high resolution LCD displays;
  • Automatic or manual revisionary modes;
  • 3D synthetic vision;
  • Highway-in-the-sky (HITS) navigation;
  • Geo-referenced hover vector;
  • Helicopter terrain awareness and warning system (HTAWS);
  • Night vision A&B capabilities;
  • Weather radar integration;
  • Integrated ADS-B traffic display;
  • Engine instrument crew advisory system (EICAS);
  • Data acquisition units for custom engine monitoring;
  • Flight data recording;
  • Graphical FMS/VHF navigation; and
  • Moving map.

“After an exhaustive search and ongoing evaluation of available and developing glass cockpit systems, I am confident the Genesys IDU-680 will deliver rapid and enduring innovations for our operators,” said Tilton. “Its 100 percent digital and upgradeable open architecture will enable rapid integration and certification not only on the MD 902, but across our growing scout attack platforms, as well.”

In addition to its standard installation on the MD 902, MD Helicopters will certify the Genesys Aerosystems IDU-680 System as the primary integrated cockpit solution for the MD 6XX Concept aircraft, the MD 530G light scout attack helicopter, and on the MD 530F to support both commercial and military configurations.

“We are extremely excited and proud that MD Helicopters has selected our integrated display units for the MD 902 Explorer,” said the company’s director of sales and marketing, Jamie Luster. “We believe that our technology and ability to provide unique solutions to MD Helicopters will help them achieve even greater success for the MD 902 in the growing global market for VVIP and special mission helicopters.”

“I am inspired by the capability enhancements this partnership with Genesys Aerosystems will deliver,” concludes Tilton. “I look forward to a long and exciting collaboration with the Genesys team, and to ensuring MD Helicopters’ operators are always flying on the leading edge of technology and design.”
