Heli-One, a leading global provider of helicopter maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, has completed search and rescue (SAR) cabin modifications on two Airbus Helicopters H225 aircraft for CHC Helicopter (CHC).

The cabin modification was designed in close collaboration with CHC’s SAR crews to optimize usage within a size-restricted space. The design is a modular format that allows crews to reconfigure the cabin to usage preferences.  The modifications consist of:

•       stretcher installations
•       modular medical equipment wall with reconfigurable units
•       sea tray to collect water and fluids
•       storage solutions (for trauma bags, additional equipment, etc.)

“In close consultation with SAR experts, we designed this modification to be light, flexible, and easy to operate and reconfigure,” said Tor Baustad, head of design for Heli-One in Norway. “We implemented an easy sliding and locking mechanism on the stretcher installations for maximum efficiency without compromising safety.”

To meet CHC’s requirements, Heli-One’s design team in Stavanger had to quickly develop this modular solution and utilized 3D printing to prototype the modification. This improved efficiency when modelling solutions to scale and enabled development and installation for CHC in just four months.

H225 operators providing SAR services can now have this modification installed with a two week turnaround time.

“We continue to distinguish ourselves as an industry leader in modification design, developing innovative, mission specific and intuitive solutions for our customers and employing new technologies like 3D printing to reduce turnaround times,” said Anthony DiNota, President, Heli-One. “SAR crews operate in extreme environments and this modification enables them to excel in their duties by providing maximum space use optimization, customizable configuration, and the highest levels for safety.”

Heli-One Stavanger is a European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approved design organization, and the modification holds an EASA Supplemental Type Certificate.
