A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced a 57-year-old man on the evening of Feb. 16 from the fishing vessel Island Enterprise, approximately 57 miles northeast of Cold Bay, Alaska.
The Jayhawk helicopter crew forward deployed to Cold Bay hoisted the man and safely transported him to Cold Bay where Guardian Flight Services’ medical personnel waited for further transfer to Anchorage, Alaska.
Watchstanders at the 17th Coast Guard District command center received a medevac request from Health Force Partners for a man found unconscious in the freezer aboard the Island Enterprise at approximately 5:30 p.m. Watchstanders notified the Coast Guard duty flight surgeon who recommended the medevac.
“This case demonstrates the value aircraft and crews forward deployed to Cold Bay provide during the winter fishing season,” said Lt Cdr Orion Bloom, command duty officer for the 17th District. “The flight time saved in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands helps us deliver mariners to a higher level of care.”
On scene weather at the time of the medevac was 16-mile-per-hour winds, 8-foot seas and 11.5-mile visibility.
