TCU students play key roles at Fort Worth helicopter company

Two engineering students on internships have foundthemselves deeply involved in efforts to design a new type of helicopter forthe U.S. Army.

Phillip Gomez and Joseph McGee, from TexasChristian University, are working at AVX Aircraft Co. one of four companiesawarded design contracts for a new generation of helicopters that the armyhopes to begin acquiring around 2025-30.

The company is pushing to convince the Army that ahelicopter using a coaxial rotor system combined with dual ducted fans can liftmore, fly faster and be cheaper to operate than conventional helicopters.
