A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced an injured mariner from a vessel 34 miles northwest of Cold Bay.
The Jayhawk crew safely transported the patient to emergency medical services in Cold Bay for a commercial flight to Anchorage.
Coast Guard 17th District command center watchstanders received a request Sunday morning from the master of the 680-foot fish processing vessel Ocean Phoenix who reported a 30-year-old male crewmember was suffering from an eye injury and needed medical assistance.
The watchstanders directed the launch of the forward deployed Jayhawk crew in Cold Bay.
“This is the third medevac in a week the forward operating location in Cold Bay has responded to,” said Chief Petty Officer Christopher Cole, a watchstander with the Coast Guard 17th District. “FOLs are strategically placed throughout Alaska to minimize the time it takes to respond to incidents like we’ve seen this week.”
Weather on scene was reported as 8- to 10-foot seas, 28 mph winds and occasional squalls that reduced visibility to a few miles.
