The U.S. Navy is supporting greater levels of software reuse through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Rockwell Collins for Required Navigation Performance-Area Navigation (RNP-RNAV) Flight Management System.
The CRADA between Rockwell Collins and the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Air Combat Electronics Program Office (PMA209) will culminate in a fall 2015 demonstration of RNP-RNAV technologies aligned with the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) standard. This RNP-RNAV application leverages innovative commercial technologies that are currently operational on commercial and tactical aircraft.
“Our proven and affordable RNP-RNAV FMS solution already enables multiple tactical aircraft types to safely interoperate within civil airspace,” said Troy Brunk, vice president and general manager of Airborne Solutions for Rockwell Collins. “A version of the RNP-RNAV FMS aligned to the FACE Technical Standard allows tactical aircraft that support a FACE operating environment to easily integrate advanced navigation performance standards and meet current mandates.”
Leveraging 15 years of open systems architecture development, Rockwell Collins continues to build upon its common, flexible and affordable solutions with new products aligned to the FACE Technical Standard, NAVAIR’s Open Architecture Backbone and the U.S. Army’s Common Operating Environment. Rockwell Collins is a sponsor and founding member of the FACE Consortium, and holds multiple leadership positions at the steering committee and subcommittee levels.
