“People in medical emergencies – aren’t they our most important motivation?” asked the president of the European HEMS and Air Ambulance Committee (EHAC), Stefan Becker at the beginning of the symposium of EHAC.

More than 50 experts from all parts of Europe discussed the situation and further development of air rescue on June 15 and 16 in Baden-Baden. Represented at this meeting, alongside air rescue organizations, were also the manufacturers of helicopters and medical equipment as well as important suppliers.

During the conference DRF Luftrettung presented its Operation-Center at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport and shared experiences as launch operator of the new Airbus Helicopters H145 with the participants.

To ensure an optimal medical care for emergency patients EHAC continually strives to make the air rescue as safe, effective and consistent as possible. Furthermore, EHAC wants to actively shape the future of air rescue together with the air rescue organizations, medical professional associations, public authorities and manufacturers in an innovative manner.

This emphasized Becker at the beginning of the symposium. For this purpose international experts addressed political, medical and flight operation issues in numerous presentations.

In addition to scientific studies and examples of best practice, future scenarios for application possibilities for rescue helicopters were discussed. The participants also talked about the increasing danger of private drones during air rescue missions and how to avoid accidents.

At the Operation-Center of DRF Luftrettung located at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, the participants were able to gain insights into the technical center of DRF Luftrettung. Technical director Thilo Scheffler offered a guided tour through the maintenance area with 11 maintenance docks and its adjacent workshops.

The Operation-Center ensures the airworthiness of the worldwide used air ambulance aircraft and more than 50 helicopters of DRF Luftrettung around the clock, 365 days a year. Within the guided tour, the participants had the opportunity to inspect the new H145.

Scheffler and medical director Dr. Jörg Braun emphasized the excellent performance of the helicopter and the flexibility of the medical interior concept, in the context of which DRF Luftrettung played an important part as co-developer. For DRF Luftrettung the H145 is particularly suited for rescue missions at night and the use of night vision goggles.
