Swedavia acquisition of Gothenburg airport impacts helicopter operators

Göteborg City Airport Press Release | January 26, 2015

Estimated reading time 3 minutes, 8 seconds.

In-depth analyses of the runway system at Göteborg City Airport indicate that extensive measures are needed for the long-term development of the airport. As a result, Swedavia has decided to acquire the remaining shares in the company that operates the airport and has adopted an approach to the gradual winding down of operations at Göteborg City Airport, otherwise known as Säve Airport.

While the timetable for the winding down process is unclear, the closure would impact a number of helicopter and fixed-wing operations at the airport, including the Swedish Police Air Support unit, which has a base and a flight school at Göteborg; air ambulance operator Norrlandsflyg, which has one of seven bases at the airport; helicopter training organization Svensk Pilotutbildning; Scandinavian AirAmbulance, which has a fleet of three Beech Super King Air 200s; the Swedish Coast Guard; and European Maintenance Service, which is a service center for Cessna Citation aircraft.

Since late November, heavy passenger traffic at Göteborg City Airport has been redirected to Göteborg Landvetter Airport. This is the result of potential deficiencies identified in the runway system. In-depth analyses of the runway system have now determined that extensive measures are needed in order for heavier passenger traffic to return to airport. Investment requirements for the runway system are estimated to be around SEK 250 million.

In light of the heavy passenger traffic that constitutes the basis of operations at Göteborg City Airport, Swedavia has decided to take over the remaining shares in the company that operates the airport. At the same time, Swedavia has adopted an approach to the continued development of Göteborg Landvetter Airport in order to ensure the region’s access. Operations at Göteborg City Airport will thus be wound down over the long term. Therefore Swedavia has given notice to all employees at the airport.

“Unfortunately, there is no potential to develop Göteborg City Airport in a way that promotes the opportunity to travel to and from the West Götaland region. It is therefore necessary to concentrate resources on Göteborg Landvetter Airport in order to contribute to the region’s continued development in the best way,” says Karl Wistrand, deputy CEO at Swedavia.

Commercial airlines that have operations at Göteborg City Airport will be offered opportunities to set up operations at Göteborg Landvetter Airport. In addition, dialogues will be initiated with the remaining operations, including general aviation and aviation of service to society, with the aim of finding long-term solutions. However, these operations will be able to use the infrastructure until further notice.

The Swedavia Group owns, operates and develops 10 airports across Sweden, with 2,400 employees and annual revenue of about 5 billion Swedish kronor.
