Survivor turns Life Guard 12 rescue into heart-health outreach

from a Med-Trans Minute story by Karen McNew | November 25, 2014

Estimated reading time 1 minute, 18 seconds.

Thanks to the help of the Life Guard 12 crew, Kay Lewis survived a heart attack one year ago. And now she believes that experience had a greater meaning for her than leading her to embark on a healthier lifestyle. She has made it her mission through The Mended Hearts Organization to create awareness and help other heart surgery survivors find a way to recovery and become stronger physically and emotionally.

Kay says, “I had been ignoring the symptoms for about three months. But they became extremely severe three days before my heart attack. I attributed them to the heat and working in the garden. I thought, I’m too young, this is just a heat event.”

She had no history of heart disease, but at age 55 Kay was experiencing a heart attack and minutes mattered. Life Guard 12 crewmembers acted fast — and transported her from Sonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Life Guard 12 pilot, Russ Rivers, commends Life Guard 12 nurse Carson Gibson and paramedic Larry Bird for their efficiency, professionalism and personal level of care. Thank you to Life Guard 12 for another job well done!
