Sikorsky Aircraft announced on June 2 that it will be eliminating approximately 1,400 production-related positions over the next 12 months, starting immediately.
The “global workforce reduction” will affect a mix of employees and contractors at Sikorsky’s facilities in Poland, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. As part of this activity, the company will vacate smaller satellite facilities and consolidate remaining production volume into larger campuses, to include exiting its current facility in Bridgeport, Conn., and relocating employees to the Stratford, Conn., facility.
According to Sikorsky spokesman Paul Jackson, “It is important to note that none of these announced layoffs are a result of the facility consolidation.”
In a statement issued to media, Jackson explained, “Sustained decreases in oil prices continue to drive significant declines in capital investments by oil companies in offshore oil exploration projects impacting Sikorsky and resulting in reduced production levels. Additionally, Sikorsky continues to experience softness in demand for certain international military products.”

He added, “We will work closely with the impacted employees to ease the transition, and with all our employees, customers and suppliers to ensure continued delivery on all our business commitments.”
The softness in international military demand was demonstrated in April, as Sikorsky lost out on a major military contract in Poland that called for the supply of 50 multi-role helicopters. Through its PZL Mielec subsidiary, Sikorsky had proposed the S-70i (an international version of the Black Hawk) for the procurement, but Poland’s Ministry of National Defence pre-selected Airbus Helicopters’ H225M Caracal to replace its aging fleet of Mil Mi-8/17 utility and Mi-14 anti-submarine aircraft.
News of the layoffs follows an announcement earlier this year by United Technologies Corp., Sikorsky’s parent company, that it was “exploring strategic options” for Sikorsky, including spinning it off as a stand-alone company.
