Two Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews safely medevaced three injured crewmembers from the 587-foot cargo vessel Copacabana approximately 200 miles south of Kodiak, Alaska, April 21, 2014.
The crewmembers were flown to Kodiak to meet commercial medical flight services who flew the men to higher level medical care in Anchorage.
Coast Guard aircrews at Air Station Kodiak, Alaska, prepared an HC-130 Hercules airplane and two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters to take off and conduct the medevac.
Coast Guard aircrews, Coast Guard Fire and Rescue personnel, Kodiak Fire Department and LifeMed Alaska personnel transferred one of three injured men from a Coast Guard helicopter to a gurney and ultimately a LifeMed Alaska jet for further transport to Anchorage April 21, 2014, in Kodiak, Alaska.
The Coast Guard received a request from the master of the 587-foot cargo vessel Copacabana Sunday reporting his crewmen had been injured when the ship sustained a hit from a large wave at sea prompting the Coast Guard to launch the two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew to respond.
An Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules airplane crew managed communications on scene during the hoists and provided a self rescue capability for the Jayhawk crews.
The aircrew flew cover for two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews, providing enhanced communications and a self rescue capability, while the Jayhawk crews safely hoisted three injured crewmen from the 587-foot Liberian-flagged cargo vessel Copacabana around 200 miles south of Kodiak Island.
In addition to the regular crew a Coast Guard flight surgeon and a health services technician from the Rockmore King Clinic in Kodiak attended the flight to provide inflight medical care to three injured crewmen from the 587-foot cargo vessel Copacabana.
