The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has granted additional funding to Boeing to continue development of its Phantom Swift vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) experimental aircraft for its X-Plane program. The Arlington, Va.-based agency has exercised a $9.6-million option to move forward with Phase 1B, where Boeing will carry out a number of tasks to refine Phantom Swift’s design.

Included in the milestones are a preliminary design review and a systems definition review. Nearly three-fourths of the work will take place at Boeing’s plant at Ridley Park outside Philadelphia, with a targeted completion date of Nov. 30, 2015. Other locations involved in the project include Manassas, Va. and Torrance, Calif.
