Coast Guard rescues Kodiak hiker from Spruce Island

The Coast Guard rescued ahiker from Spruce Island located about 12 miles north of Kodiak Thursday morning after he became lost in the woods. John Peterson, 18,resident of Kodiak was reported missing by a friend Wednesday night after he did not return from exploring the island and surrounding woods.

The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Juneau received a call from Alaska State Troopers about 3:30 a.m. requesting assistance in locating Peterson. He was reported last seen in Ouzinkie Village between 7 p.m. and 8:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Alaska State Troopers and local residents searched the area but were unsuccessful in locating Peterson. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak received a call for assistance and launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew to assist in the search.

Peterson was located by the aircrew and hoisted at approximately 6:45 a.m. The helicopter crew reported Peterson was in good condition and delivered him safely to Ouzinkie Village.
