People frequently ask me how far in advance we work at Vertical. The answer: about six to eight weeks. To get the magazine printed and distributed on time, we start assembling content almost two months before the cover date (which means our contributors started working on their feature stories well before that). We then work in news and updates right up until our print deadline.
We’ve just wrapped up the latest of those cycles, for the August-September issue. Now the magazine is off to the printer, hopefully to appear in your mailbox soon after that. Here’s a sneak preview of what will be in it —
Ted Carlson’s story on HMX-1, the Presidential helicopter squadron. We’re all excited about this feature, a Vertical exclusive. Ted introduces us to the U.S. Marine Corps Nighthawks, the elite squadron responsible for transporting the President. Ted’s story is fascinating, but you’ll be blown away by his air-to-air photography over Washington, D.C.
Ken Swartz’s update on the oil spill response in the Gulf of Mexico. In his continuing series on the GOM, Ken provides another update on how helicopters are responding to the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Generally described as the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, it has become one of the largest civilian helicopter operations in U.S. history, too.
My story about Kaman Corporation and its unmanned K-Max. The K-Max has always been one of my favorite helicopters, so I eagerly volunteered to pay a visit to Kaman’s headquarters in Bloomfield, Conn. earlier this year. Stay tuned for much more about this, including an account of my demo flight in a Kaman Husky.
And more: we also have features on Ontario-based National Helicopters, helicopter mosquito control, Air America, and what makes a good instructor. Nick Gagnon reviews compact flashlights in his Gadgets and Gear column, and Dorcey Wingo returns to our back-page column, There I Was.
With the August-September issue behind us, we’re already at work on October-November… but more on that another time.
